Editorial Design-Project Copy Cat

This project required us to design double page editorial spreads. The brief was quite open about where it could be used, i chose to use these spreads as part of a magazine. The editorials were all based on our Critical Studies subject and so we used our academic essays as the 'article'. These essays were based on the french movie, The 400 Blows, so bear in mind the quality of images we were given to work with. We were asked to have 3 seperate designs: One which was completely our own and another two which we were to use from our peers and slightly transform to develop into a more personal style. I honestly did not like this project so any feedback will be highly appreciated.

Bootcamp Crit

Bootcamp ran during the first week of the academic year. This year was quite different though. It concentrated on us as individual designers, asking us to bring out our personalities as designers. Last year we were taken through the design process by learning about the 5 different rooms of design. I found the process of design more useful than focussing on myself as a designer. I would like to see boot camp as a recap session almost reminding the students why they are here at GDC and what our purpose actually is. It would be interesting to go through the basics and the small intricate details which designers almost  always forget about.

Photo Farm

This was by the far the most interesting and enjoyable project of the year (to date). Photography didn't seem to be my thing at first but once I got active I couldn't stop. The brief required us to complete a bunch of tutorials in order to get our photographs. We were then allowed to take them to Photoshop for some enhancement.

i DesignER

PACKAGING! i DesignER was a fun project as we got to conceptualize any product that could be sold to designers in a design emergency situation. After the conceptualization of the product, an innovative packaging design was to be created. The catch to the project was that the product had to be a part of the Apple Macintosh brand and had to be named with the synonymous "i".
The concept for my product was a cloning scanner that could basically clone anything the designer wanted to, whether it be more hands to work with or more mounting boards for a late presentation. The theme i chose to work with for the packaging was the actual short cut keys used in Adobe Illustrator for the clone tool. The theme ran into the box of the packaging which was made rotatable to give the packaging fun, entertaining and interactive abilities. The rotating box was put into a sleeve for protection and display. I aimed for a sleek and clean design with the splash of colors so that the package isn't too boring. NB: each colored strip perforates off so take your pick and get cloning!!

Character Identity & Symbolic Evolutions

This project was all about branding. The brief required us to watch a specific movie and from there brand the movie as well as three chosen characters. We were to create four logos and business cards for this project. I currently only have pictures of the logos.
The movie i chose to brand was the legendary Braveheart featuring Mel Gibson. To carry on this theme I chose to go authentic with fine liner and watercolor paints to create my logos. I chose to use banners and crests as the base for these logos as they fit in with the times of the movie as well as in the mood.

Just My Type

Just My Type was a typography project we began the year with. The brief required us to design a book with typography as a main focus. The book basically consisted of 10 double page spreads (DPS's), each spread has an inspirational quote chosen by a student designer. Each spread then had to be designed according to his/her design preference, including their desired typeface.. The concept for my book was to use of type as fractals, so i basically took the type and created unique fractals for each design. The setup of the book was chosen to alternate between coloured spreads and non-colored spreads, each matching the persons personality or design preference.
